Hey email crew! Thanks for giving me a little space in your inbox on this Friday.
We’re only two weeks out from the release of my new EP ‘sad girl summer’ and I’m feeling a lot of things about finally releasing it. I wanted to share some behind the scenes stuff, but before I do that, here are a few links that are crucial in showing this release some love & support.
Okay. Got those out of the way. I always feel like I’m hawking you for things but in all honesty, this is the only way I can keep making music. And I don’t think I want to give up on doing it… so, thanks for tolerating me!
MOVING ON (lol)
It’s hard to believe that I started working on this EP in December of 2022. That’s when we laid down the first rhythm tracks for ‘drunk fight’ — take a look ⤵️
It’s crazy to remember what our studio looked like back then. We were just starting to build it out and didn’t even have a desk in there yet, so Chip is like huddled over his laptop on a stool in the corner 😅
Unlike other records, this one came together in pieces over really long stretches. I’d try something then leave the session file unopened for several months then come back to it again. I wasn’t really sure if it was ever going to be finished. Admittedly, as I’m writing this email I’m cutting it so close to my deadline, it’s not even funny.
So why did it take so long?
A few different reasons, I think. First, I decided to re-release my album Into the Fray and we actually recorded the drums for those bonus tracks on the same day as the video I shared above.
But beyond that, life just happened in a way that I never really could have expected. Truthfully, the last few years have been some of the more challenging ones I’ve ever been through—the start of this year being the hardest, with the loss of multiple family members early on. The grief I was experiencing (and still am) fueled my songwriting but the side of me that’s practical, productive & business-oriented didn’t necessarily excel under all of those feelings.
I share this because I think it’s important to know that real stuff exists behind these songs. Even I need to remind myself of that when I’m in promo mode. Because at the end of the day, yes, this EP is a product that I’m marketing to you, but the heart and emotion that went into it really can’t be bought or sold.
Upcoming Shows
8/15 - Writer’s Round at Reveler (me + three other songwriters sharing songs/stories together)
8/24 - The Camel - sad girl summer EP Release Show
9/18 - The Tin Pan - opening for Liz Longley
If you want to see a show, please consider buying a ticket to my release show at The Camel on 8/24. If I could sell out that room at some point it would be a huge accomplishment. I’d probably cry happy tears! A girl can dream ✨
Thanks!
Thank you for the support, for letting me blab about my little songs, and for sticking with me thus far. I hope you love sad girl summer and feel your feelings.
